500 Days of Summer

I know this may be out of the ordinary for me to post about a modern film, but I just had to talk about this film. I had heard many people talk about this film with joy on their face, while I try to hide the anger on my face and bite my tongue. You may think that I am overreacting but this film to me anyway is a monstrosity. I first saw this film around a year ago because the title just seemed to be cropping up wherever I turned and also with the rave reviews from my friends and sister. During the film everything about it to me was wrong.

 I didn't like the actors or the characters (who I thought were wishy-washy and forgettable) and I really didn't like the way it was directed, skipping to different days etc. I watched the film with my mum and she didn't like it either. I thought the plot was just bad and the way they portray their ideas of love was not right. I don't like the whole "this is not a love story" theme. I especially didn't like the female leads character (and no it's not because of jealousy as you may think) because of her "I don't believe in true love" attitude and she doesn't really want a boyfriend and then she blatantly leads him on, she is such a tease. Also the actress tries to hard to be cool and hipster this lead me to loathe her.

Romantic comedies are supposed to have lovable characters and I just could not stand these characters. I also thought the script was just cheesy and unfunny and wasn't witty and snappy. It's as if everything tried to hard to be appealing and tired to hard to make itself an indie film, I mean come on a pretty girl who doesn't believe in love and a guy who says that he loves her its as if the movie is trying to say to everyone can you make this hot girl love you. The leading man as-well was very weepy and mopey, I had no sympathy for him. This post may seem harsh and I know many people will disagree with my opinion but if you put something out to the world then it is going to be criticized whether it be good or bad criticism. I am sorry for the rant like post but this film just angers me with it being rated so high on imdb at 7.8 while others which I believe to be a lot better such as Mr Blandings Builds his Dream House which is only rated 7.2 (I know it's a random example but I do believe this film to be much better). It's just not my kind of film and I just don't understand what is so special about it, please if yo know tell me. I wold like to know your opinions of this movie and if you feel the same way as I do.

In conclusion this film tries to hard to be different and unique by doing this making itself just the same as every other romantic comedy. It just tries to hard to be spontaneous.
