Frank Sinatra BLOG-IT #3

I felt like I needed to shine a light on this gems talents. I think he is incredibly underrated not for his worldwide famous singing oh no but for his acting. I am a fan of his works leading from his musicals like on the town, anchors aweigh, guys and dolls to his light hearted romances (well not always very light hearted) like the tender trap, young at heart and then to the more serious films such as the man with the golden arm (which is excellent), suddenly and from here to eternity. Anyway lets get on with the show...

1. My personal favourite of his films?

I really liked The man with the golden arm, his withdrawal scene was one of my favourite performances ever.

2. A film match they were made for?

I think him and Paulette Goddard would be adequate.

3. His ultimate box-set:

On the town

The Tender trap
some came running
the Manchurian candidate
the man with the golden arm
young at heart

4. A role meant for them but alas never got the chance to play it?

Hm I have never really watched a movie and thought WOW this role was meant for Frank Sinatra. I would have liked to have seen him in Carousel but no he had to quit.

5. His best character?

I liked his character in High Society just because he is so sweet.

6. The perfect romantic couple.

Maybe him and Ginger Rogers, that would be quite cute.

Young At Heart (1954)

Family fun.
I am actually watching Gordon Douglas's young at heart as we speak so I decided for it to be my first ever review. I adore Frank Sinatra, and Doris Day is just a hoot and a half to watch. I would recommend this film to anyone who is young at heart. It starred many fabulous actors such as Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, Gig Young, Ethel Barrymore, Dorothy Malone, Elisabeth Fraser and Robert Keith. Anyway I shall start at the very beginning so if you have any interest to watch this film without spoilers then look away.

Laurie (Doris Day) and her two sisters live with their parents but all begin to fall in love when a handsome young man called Alex (Gig Young) enters their lives. Soon a friend of Alex's also enters their lives his name being Barney (Frank Sinatra). Barney is a cynical man full of self pity. He soon starts to fall for Laurie who is determined to change his cynical ways. eventually Alex proposes to Laurie and she accepts to the dismay of Barney and Laurie's sister Amy. Laurie soon realises here undoubted love for Barney and marries him on the day of her and Alex's wedding (how rude). Barney is still depressed because he believes that Laurie doesn't love him (though she does). Barney and Laurie aren't doing so well either with Barney insistent that he is a failure and can't find a good job. Soon things take a turn for the worst with Barney taking very drastic actions, but will love come through in the end. Yes it will....or no it won't whatever happens, happens.

Frank's performance is sweet and tender he is just a hopeless character. He always makes me smile. Doris is her usual flamboyant self but now dealing with a troubled soul Ooh. Ethel Barrymore is her amazing self playing the firm but fair and completely lovable aunt.
The lost soul, lone ranger, misunderstood. You be the judge.
I rate this film 7.8 out of 10. 10 being WOWEE and 1 being meh...
