Roman Holiday (1953)

This masterpiece of cinema was also Audrey Hepburn's breakout performance. A while ago I had a massive debate with myself about which was the best Audrey film. In the end Roman Holiday came out on top it is and always will be my personal favourite Hepburn film. This was also a big success for the dashing Gregory Peck who was trying to find a romantic comedy which "didn't have Cary Grants fingerprints all over it" as he always felt like he was offered the roles that Cary Grant turned down. Ironically Cary Grant did turn down Roman Holiday but nonetheless Gregory Peck's performance was imPECKable hahaha (i know it isn't how you spell impeccable but you have to take advantage of any opportunity given).  Time for some pictures.

Plot time SPOILERS ALERT!!!. Princess Anne (Hepburn) is on a highly publicized tour of Europe. She is becoming very stressed with all of her royal duties and has to be sedated to calm her down. She then runs away onto the back of a delivery truck and escapes soon the sedative kicks in and she falls asleep on a bench. She is found by Joe Bradley (Peck) who mistakes her for being drunk unaware that she is Princess Anne but when her vague answers aren't enough to get her home he resorts to taking her to his apartment. He ends up missing an interview with Princess Anne and lies to his boss about it. when in fact the papers are saying that she is very ill. when Joe see's the paper and realises that the girl in his apartment is princess Anne so he offers his boss an exclusive interview with the princess for a handsome sum of money. He calls a friend of his who is a photographer (Eddie Albert) to help him cover the interview. He then offers lets Anne leave his apartment and follows her to bump into her later. He then offers her a day of fun things which she offers unaware of his knowledge of her identity. The couple soon start to fall in love blissfully unaware of that fact. they have a day of adventure, fun and trouble before she must leave.

The film is mesmerizing. It was directed by William Wyler. It was the first hollywood production to be completely filmed in Rome. The setting was beautiful and that was the reason why it was filmed in black and white so the setting wouldn't over shadow the actors.

I rate this film 8.2 out of 10. Amazing
