City Lights (1931)

MY ALL-TIME FAVOURITE FILM EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!City Lights had me bawling for days and I hold my hands up to say I do enjoy a good tear jerker but City Lights was something else I was a wreck covered in smeared mascara and full of sniffles for a week. It honestly has the best and most loving film ending out of any other film I have ever had the pleasure to watch.

Let's get down to some facts:

  1.  Orson Welles said it was his favourite movie ever.
  2. Chaplin made the film during the sound era and was pressured to make it a talking production but thankfully he refused.
  3. It took 3 years to make though they were only shooting for 180 days.
  4. Albert Einstein and George Bernard Shaw were at the films opening.
  5. Chaplin wanted his Star from the gold rush to be his love interest in the film and even fired Virginia Cherill after a fight and then tried to get Georgia Hale but had to rehire Cherill for double her salary as most of the film had already been shot.
  6. Winston Churchill visited the set and Chaplin took a break to make a short film with him.
  7. The ending was the inspiration for Woody Allen's Manhattan ending.
  8. One shot had to be filmed 342 times as Chaplin couldn't find the right way to show that the blind girl thought that the tramp was wealthy.
  9. Directed by Charles Chaplin.
  10. Is absolutely AMAZING.

 general plot
A tramp falls for a blind girl who believes that he is wealthy. With the help of an on and off relationship with a wealthy man the tramp tries to earn enough money to pay for the blind girls operation to gain back her sight.

I rate City Lights 9.1 out of 10!!!
